Wolves are vital in ensuring ecological balance. Their presence significantly reduces ungulate browsing and foraging patterns which promotes vegetation growth and health, indirectly benefiting hundreds of species in the surrounding habitat that depend on the vegetation.

Because wolves typically prey on sick or weak animals, their predation on diseased ungulates can also help reduce cases of Chronic Wasting Disease-infected deer and elk.
